Shypple's Dutch Methane Recovery project

How our customers can compensate for their shipment's CO2 emissions with GoodZero?

Shypple offers a variety of projects to its clients, and among them, a standout initiative is the methane recovery project, conducted in collaboration with GoodZero.

                                                                                                            How does this program work?

The Dutch Methane Recovery project implements an advanced manure management process that goes beyond traditional practices. The collaboration of the three farms (Aben Recycling BV, Houbensteyn Milieu BV, and BV Landgoed de Princepeel) ensures a comprehensive and standardized approach to capturing and converting methane into renewable energy, specifically biogas. This transformative process not only significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also generates thermal energy to power the farms' operations, creating a closed-loop system of sustainability.

Methane emission avoidance

Methane is a greenhouse gas with 28 times higher global warming potential than CO2 over 100 years. Given its substantial contribution to environmental impacts, avoiding methane emissions is crucial in achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement, aiming to stay below a 1.5-degree temperature increase. In the Netherlands, approximately 70% of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions stem from livestock farmers, particularly methane emissions from animal manure.

Certification and verification

The Dutch Methane Recovery project has received certification from Verra according to their internationally recognized methodology for manure digestion projects. Furthermore, Carbon Check verified the project in 2023, ensuring that it meets the highest standards for environmental integrity. The credits generated by the project are categorized as avoidance credits, reflecting the core practice of preventing methane emissions.

Why did Shypple choose methane recovery?

The agricultural sector in the Netherlands is currently under close observation. It is considered one of the country's most polluting industries. Shypple's support for this local project is based on the goal of making the industry more sustainable and reducing the amount of methane gas in the air.
